Spread the love

Noone likes boring. As a dad, It is always a good thing to switchup the normal and challenge the status quo. I want us as dads ti start stepping out of the box and do things we are not comfortable doing.

Even as a child I was always shy. I remember this skit I played in mt church, many 10 or 12 years of age. I was the king and long story short, when it was time to kiss the queen on her cheek I froze and put my head down into my lap.

These uncomfortable moments are moment we should mitigate as adults, also teaching out little ones of not being afraid of the unknowns. There is a list of ten things we will be talking about today. My intention is to try at least half of them.

Full transparency, theres a few items on the list that I have started and do in my spare time with the intention of making them my full time gig, but we will get to those later.

Embrace the Curiosity of Learning

Learning doesn’t stop when school ends; it’s a lifelong journey. Showing a love for learning can light a spark in our kids’ hearts, teaching them the importance of always growing. At the age 40 plus, I am learning daily how to run and support a small and upcoming business with all the intricasies it entails. Picture it like planting a seed that continues to flourish over time, and your actions can be the sunshine it needs to blossom.

Learn a New Instrument

Have you ever dreamed of strumming a guitar under the stars or playing soothing tunes on a piano for your family? I have a nephew taught himself to play the piano and guitar from learning by ear, he afterwards went to university and received a degree in music.

For dads learning to paly an instrument is a beautiful thing. It gives you more opportunities to have sing along and with the family.

By learning a new instrument, you can enhance not only your skills but also your everyday life. With some practice and patience, you might find yourself becoming the rock star dad your family always admired.

So why wait any longer? Grab that guitar or sit at the piano. Let the music flow, and embrace the new melodies of your parenting journey.

Take a Cooking Class

Lets be real, who doesn’t like showing off their culinary skills either by choice or on purpose? I have a bunch of family who are nothing short of foodies, and there is competition and trash talking daily.

Even when it comes to preparing variations of food for the family to keep it fresh and interesting, children really appreciate variety. Imagine the aroma of a freshly baked pie wafting through your home as you hug your little one tight. That’s the power of taking a cooking class.

For a stay-at-home dad like me, cooking is more than just preparing meals—it’s a way to connect with my family, create memories, and pass on traditions. Plus, it’s a fantastic way to model independence and creativity to the kids.

Cooking classes might be an excellent opportunity for both novice and experienced cooks. Not only do they teach new recipes and techniques, but they also provide a chance to bond with fellow parents, sharing parenting stories. This is one of those activities that can truly enhance your life as a dad.

Start a DIY Project

DIY projects are a great outlets for dads to do stuff they really enjoy. Living in Mexico and near the beach there were always something to fix. In this instance I want o talk about things that dad wouldn’t mind doing uninterrupted for hours. I love cars, working on cars, watching F1, even going to my friends garage and help him fix other peoples cars.

Some dads might enjoy fixing a leaky faucet, building a treehouse, or creating a piece of furniture or diving into a project headfirst can be a fulfilling experience. DIY projects offer a special kind of satisfaction, a chance to use your hands, and see your ideas come to life.

They can also be a touching way to carry forward a father’s legacy, reminding us of those Sunday mornings spent in the garage, learning from our own dads or wishing we had. Plus, these projects not only keep you busy but can also be great bonding activities with your kids.

Join a Public Speaking Group

I once heard a joke by Jerry Seinfeld stating that public speaking is the number one fear for most people and the second is death. So in that sense, would they prefer be in the casket and giving the eulogy.

Public speaking is indeed the number 1 fear of most people and rightly so. Most of us are self-conscious enough when we leave the house wondering who is looking at us, or judge what we are wearing.

For dads aiming to boost their confidence and communication skills, joining a public speaking group can be a beneficial step. Being part of such a group not only helps you articulate your thoughts better but also brings out a version of you that might have otherwise being subdued.

Get into Martial Arts

In honor of the wise and steadfast guidance you often impart, taking a swing at martial arts and learning about learning self-defense might do you some good. It’s a journey that stirs the soul, nurtures discipline, and rekindles the strength within.

For parents embracing this path can transform the body and the mind, offering a rich tapestry of benefits woven into the fabric of fatherhood. In this day and age we are wound so tight that there is no place for a clear mind.

Have you ever thought about seeing the world through a different lens? Photography is a powerful way to capture moments, tell stories, and even develop a sharper eye for detail. It’s not just about snapping pretty pictures. For dads, taking up photography can be a journey to discover more about oneself, all while creating lasting memories for the family. As a stay-at-home dad, photography offers a blend of creativity and purpose and can be an enriching part of your parenting journey.

Capture Everyday Moments

Life’s most cherished moments often happen in the most ordinary of days. A simple walk in the park, the way sunlight filters through a tree, or your child’s expression when they discover something new are treasures waiting to be captured. Photography allows you to freeze these memories in time.

  • Focus on the Details: It’s the tiny things that often go unnoticed, like the mischief in your child’s eyes or the worn-out teddy bear that goes everywhere. These tell stories of your everyday life.

Bond with Your Children

Photography can be a fantastic way to connect with your children. Let them play with the camera and see how they view the world. It’s fascinating and often surprising to see what captures their attention.

  • Make it a Fun Activity: Plan a “photo scavenger hunt” where you and your kids take pictures of certain objects or themes around the house or neighborhood.
  • Use Photography to Teach: Teach them about light, shadows, and even a bit of science with simple photography experiments.

Embrace Creativity and Learn New Skills

Photography isn’t just clicking the shutter; it’s an art form that encourages you to see the world with fresh eyes and explore different perspectives. Learning basic photography skills can be as fulfilling as creating the images themselves.

  • Experiment with Angles: Try shooting from various angles, which might offer a fresh and unique perspective.
  • Use Online Tutorials: With countless resources available, online tutorials can make learning basic photography skills accessible and fun.

Preserve Family Memories

Photos have a unique ability to evoke emotions and transport us back to a specific moment in time. As the family historian, use photography to create photo books or digital slideshows that preserve these memories for generations.

  • Create a Family Album: Regularly update a family photo album. This is not only a creative outlet but also a treasure trove of memories for your family to look back on.
  • Document Growth: Take annual photos to document your family’s growth over the years, turning it into a beloved tradition.

Photography can be more than a hobby; it becomes a tool for storytelling, learning, and bonding. By capturing your family’s journey through photography, you not only enrich your life as a dad but also create a legacy of memories for your children to cherish.

Connect with the Cosmos

Have you ever looked up and felt a deep connection to the stars? It’s like the universe is whispering secrets across the vastness. As dads, we can sometimes feel like islands, isolated by waves of responsibility. Yet, when we gaze at the stars, it reminds us of our place in this grand universe, making us feel both small and connected, all at once.

A Stargazing Adventure with Your Kids

Why not set up a family stargazing night? Grab some blankets, find a quiet spot, and let the night sky be your guide. It’s more than just an activity; it’s a chance to bond, to share stories, and to ignite your children’s curiosity about the universe. This is one of those parenting tips that works like magic—transforming a simple evening into a cherished memory, even for a stay at home dad.

Participate in Improv Comedy

When thinking about ways to improve as a dad, consider stepping into the delightful chaos of improv comedy. This isn’t just about being funny; it’s about embracing spontaneity and learning to think on your feet. As a dad, you face unexpected moments every day, much like an improv scene where the script is unwritten, and you must craft something out of thin air. By participating in improv, you can become more adaptive, creative, and open to the unpredictable nature of parenting.

Build Quick Thinking Skills

In the parenting world, quick thinking is gold. When your child throws a curveball with an unexpected question or situation, having quick reflexes can mean the difference between calm resolution and chaos. Improv helps sharpen this skill by putting you in scenarios where instant decisions are needed. Imagine it as a mental gym—each session strengthens your ability to think flexibly and respond aptly.

Start a Podcast or Blog

Have you ever felt that itch to share our thoughts—whether it’s the joy in a child’s first step or the struggles of a sleepless night with a newborn. As dads, we’re filled with stories waiting to be told. Sharing those stories through a podcast or blog can be both a creative outlet and a chance to connect with other parents on similar journeys. Let’s explore how this venture can enrich your experience as a stay-at-home dad and provide some valuable parenting tips.

Discover Your Voice

Starting a podcast or blog is like inviting friends into your living room for a chat. What stories do you want to share? Think about:

  • Personal experiences: Moments that touched your heart or changed your perspective.
  • Lessons learned: Mistakes that turned into powerful lessons.
  • Parenting tips: Advice born from trial, error, and success.

Finding your voice might seem challenging, but remember, it’s just like talking to a friend. Let your personality shine; you’ll find that others are drawn to authenticity.

Engaging with a community of parents allows for an exchange of stories, creating bonds over similar challenges and triumphs.

Learn and Grow

Every episode you record or blog post you write is a step on your journey of personal growth. Here’s how this process helps you evolve:

  1. Reflect on experiences: Writing or speaking about your day-to-day challenges helps you see patterns and find meaning.
  2. Research: You’ll find yourself looking up new trends or tips, staying informed, and sharing valuable insights.
  3. Skill development: Over time, you’ll become better at communication, storytelling, and maybe even technical skills like editing.

The journey of content creation is as much for your audience as it is for your own growth and understanding of fatherhood. As you share, you’ll become more than just a storyteller—you’ll be a mentor and friend to those who listen or read.

Learn a New Language

Trying something new is like opening a door to a whole new world. As dads, we often focus on providing for our children’s needs, but sometimes it’s essential to nurture our own curiosity too. Learning a new language is a rewarding way to improve oneself. It’s not just about picking up new words or grammar rules—it’s about connecting with different cultures, expanding our horizons, and enriching our parenting toolkit. Imagine reading your child a bedtime story in French or sharing a Spanish lullaby. It’s a beautiful way to pass down curiosity and wonder.

  • Multitasking Skills: Switching between languages can help improve your multitasking skills, making you better at handling various parenting tasks.
  • Increased Creativity: Seeing the world from different linguistic perspectives can spark creativity in everyday parenting.

Cultural Appreciation

Language is the key to understanding the heart of a culture. When you learn a new language, you dive into rich histories and unique stories. This appreciation and empathy are invaluable qualities we can nurture in ourselves as fathers, and pass on to our kids.

Practical Tips to Get Started

Here’s how to fit language learning into a busy dad schedule:

  1. Use Apps: Apps like Duolingo or Babbel are great for bite-sized lessons. A lesson a day can fit easily into a coffee break.
  2. Set Realistic Goals: Aim for ten minutes a day. Consistency is more important than cramming.
  3. Engage with Media: Tune into podcasts or children’s shows in your target language. It’s a hit with the kids too!
  4. Practice with Friends: Find a fellow dad or join a local language group. Conversation practice is incredibly beneficial.
